Utö Survival

When moving to a remote island isn’t enough itself, add a electricity cut, a water supply cut and the lack of mobile data and signal. That was one of our days last week.

First it felt like a dream. We woke up in our house and realized that the fridge and freezer had stopped working during the night time (since everything in the freezer was melting). Also the house was chilly because the radiators didn’t work. The cherry on the top was when we found out that the water system was attached to power system (since the drinking water is purified from the sea water!).  Luckily the one and only shop on the island opened already 7 a.m. due the power cut and we were able to buy some water there. Local people told that there are power cuts every now and then during the storm season but those cuts usually last just few hours. Ours lasted 17 hours.

We had a chance to try our wooden stow which gave some heating as well and made our morning coffee on it. It wasn’t as quick as our coffee machine, it actually took half an hour just to get two cups of coffee.😄

When we finally got the power back in the evening, our kids were so happy that they even clapped their hands!During that one day the kids learned so much about the bare necessities that we so often take for granted.
Next day the shop owner gave everybody free ice creams as much as they could eat. And you can probably guess why….

Heating water for the dishes....😆

One day without the running water and our sink looked like this!
